Folic Acid is an important nutrient, but only about 1% of the population gets enough of it. Its effectiveness is easily destroyed through processing and storage.
Lack of folic acid during pregnancy can lead to a hearing defect in the fetus. This defect occurs during the first days or weeks of pregnancy when a woman often may not know that she is pregnant. Therefore, it is recommended that women, who may become pregnant, supplement with folic acid. Folic acid in high dosage can also lower the levels of dangerous homocysteine. Under-supply of folic acid also has other deleterious effects, like depression, irritability, fatigue, and inability to concentrate. Long-term lack of folic acid leads to problems in cell metabolism. Supplementation with folic acid is a very good idea.
